Collins Announces 2023 Congressional App Challenge Winner
Monroe, GA–Today, Representative Mike Collins (R-Ga.) announced “Team Civical” from North Oconee High School (NOHS) as the Congressional App Challenge (CAC) winner for Georgia’s Tenth Congressional District. High school seniors Anyi Lin, Jack Rumpf, and Viveka Mehrotra designed a game-based app to help young people develop and practice the knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors needed to participate in civic life.
“On this Computer Science Education Week, I am proud to congratulate Anyi, Jack, and Viveka for their exceptional application,” said Rep. Collins. “I applaud them for practicing responsible coding and using their skills to develop an app that will help enhance students' knowledge of the workings of the federal government in a fun, accessible way.”
“I also congratulate all the students who took part in the Congressional App Challenge,” Rep. Collins added. “This year, students submitted apps that address today’s significant issues, including nutrition, mental health, veterans’ resources, and educational opportunities. It’s always a pleasure to see what talented young people we have in the Tenth Congressional District, and I look forward to meeting our first-place winners to honor them in person.”
Below are the video submissions for the first, second, and third place winners that Dr. Tianming Liu, University of Georgia Distinguished Research Professor and Full Professor of Computer Science, helped review and approve:
1st Place: Civical created by Anyi Lin, Jack Rumpf, and Viveka Mehrotra from NOHS
2nd Place: MyWatkinsville created by Xavier Werth from Oconee County High School
3rd Place: Alliance created by Neal Patel from Jackson High School
The Congressional App Challenge was created by Congress in 2013 to encourage innovation and engagement in coding, computer science, and STEM education. As the first-place winner, “Team Civical” will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives' website, displayed in a U.S. Capitol exhibit, and invited to attend the 2024 House of Code in Washington, D.C.
